This privacy notice tells you what to expect us to do with your personal information when you subscribe to The Real Frontier.

The Real Frontier is published by Human Syntax LLC, which is the data controller for your personal information. You can contact us by email at chase@humansyntax.dev. We have not appointed a data protection officer.

What information we collect, use, and why

We collect your email address and the date you subscribed. We use this to send you The Real Frontier, a free weekly email newsletter, and to keep a record that you asked for it.

With that record we also keep which page of this website you subscribed from, and a version number for the wording you agreed to when you did. We do not record your IP address, your device or your browser.

We also record what happens to the emails we send you: whether each one was delivered, whether it bounced, whether you reported it as spam, and whether you unsubscribed.

You do not have to give us your email address, and giving it is not a statutory or contractual requirement. If you do not give it to us, we cannot send you the newsletter.

We do not carry out automated decision-making or profiling.

Lawful bases and data protection rights

Under data protection law, we must have a lawful basis for collecting and using your personal information. Our lawful basis is your consent, which you give by submitting the subscription form.

Under data protection law, you have rights including: your right of access — you have the right to ask us for copies of your personal information; your right to rectification — you have the right to ask us to rectify personal information you think is inaccurate, and to complete information you think is incomplete; your right to erasure — you have the right to ask us to erase your personal information in certain circumstances; your right to restriction of processing — you have the right to ask us to restrict the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances; your right to object to processing — you have the right to object to the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances; your right to data portability — you have the right to ask that we transfer the personal information you gave us to another organisation, or to you, in certain circumstances; and your right to withdraw consent — because we use consent as our lawful basis, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time.

Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing withdraws your consent. It is as easy to withdraw your consent as it was to give it. Withdrawing your consent does not affect the lawfulness of anything we did before you withdrew it.

You are not required to pay any charge for exercising your rights. If you make a request, we have one month to respond to you. Please contact us at chase@humansyntax.dev if you wish to make a request.

Your right to object to direct marketing

You have the right to object at any time to us using your personal information for direct marketing, which includes sending you this newsletter. If you object, we will stop. You can object by using the unsubscribe link in any email we send you, or by emailing chase@humansyntax.dev.

Who we share your information with

We share your email address with two service providers, who process it on our instructions and only to provide their service to us. Cloudflare hosts this website and stores the subscriber list. Resend delivers the newsletter: we give it the addresses to send each issue to, and it records what happened to each email and tells us.

Where your information is stored

Human Syntax LLC is based in the United States, and both of the service providers named above are United States companies. Your email address and the record of your subscription are stored and processed in the United States.

How long we keep information

We keep your email address, the date you subscribed and the record of your consent for as long as you are subscribed. If you unsubscribe, or if your address is removed because our email could not be delivered or was reported as spam, we keep your address and the reason it was removed, so that it is not added back by mistake.

How to complain

If you have any concerns about our use of your personal information, you can make a complaint to us at chase@humansyntax.dev.

You can also complain to a data protection supervisory authority. In the United Kingdom that is the Information Commissioner’s Office. In the European Economic Area it is the authority for the country where you live or work, or where you think the problem happened; the European Data Protection Board publishes the list of national authorities.
